Safety Surfaces

While we advise customers to use safety surfaces, there is no legal obligation when play equipment is for private domestic use.

However, if the equipment is to be used by the public, the situation is different and the implications of an accident can be very serious. As a result, commercially approved safety surfacing is essential.

The design of your safety area is determined by the height of your play equipment. This ‘maximum free fall height’ will allow you to calculate both the depth and extent of your safety area.

Depth

As an example, a 3m free fall height on top-soil requires Playbark between 30cms (min) and 50cms (advised) deep or 2.7cms deep GrassMat

Extent

As an example, a 1.5m ‘free fall height’ needs a surface extent of 1.5m and equipment with a 2.3m free fall height requires a surface extent of 2.0m.

Materials

Rubber based safety surfaces come in the form of mats, tiles and  ‘wet pour’. While more expensive initially, rubber materials tend to very hard wearing, consistent and require little maintenance (tiles & mats are also very easy to lay). ‘Wet pour’ is a specialist material that is only used in commercial playgrounds due to it’s cost. Playbark is cheaper initially, more aesthetically pleasing and environmentally friendly but requires topping up and the depth can vary.  Grassmats are cost effective rubber mat that allows the grass to grow through making them nearly invisible but still giving you the peace of mind of  safety surfacing beneath your play equipment.

We often get asked to advise on safety surfacing so as a rough guide, for a 5m x 5m play area and play equipment with a Critical Fall Height (CFH, ie the height from the platform to the ground) of 1.5m you should budget for:

            £500 - Playbark (20cm deep)
            £500 - Grassmatt (17 sheets)
           £1000 - Rubber mulch
           £2000 - Rubber tiles
          £2500+ - Wet Pour
